Infectious Awarables: Clothes for Trendy Geeks

Chromosomes from the human genome, turned into a tie!

While shopping in Ann Arbor today, I came across a collection of ties that humored the geeky side of me. Infectuous Awarables sells a collection of ties, scarves and other items that depict real and accurate images of infectious diseases and other microbiology-related items. While many would not like the idea of sporting an image of Ebola, West Nile Virus or Chlamydia in public, the ties actually are aesthetically pleasing and were right at home in the chic home goods store where I found them. Thus, what appealed most to me was the esoteric nature of brand- most look at the items and think only that they look nice. However, the select few enlightened by (or cursed with) knowledge of such topics recognize their scientific roots. I purchased a tie depicting chromosomes from the human genome. Another one of my favorite designs showcased neurons, but I ultimately turned down that tie after recalling the pain that is an action potential (Goldman equation derivations still haunt me!). If you have a love for science that you wish to display to the world with more than just with a pocket protector, check out the art sold by Infectuous Awarables.
