Ibby’s: Campus Dining with Flair

My dinner tonight: A local greens salad with Maytag blue cheese and a house-made buttermilk dressing, miso-glazed rainbow trout with udon noodles, and decadent crème brûlée for dessert. The best part? The meal, tip and all, was apart of my student meal plan. Normally at college, when extra meal points accumulate, they are difficult to spend. At Washington University in St. Louis there is a simple and elegant way to spend those extra points. Ibby’s is a fine-dining restaurant located in the Danforth University Center of WashU. Outside the restaurant in the building are traditional student dining options, but within Ibby’s is a different atmosphere. Well-dressed waiters serve thoughtfully-prepared food on white linen-clad tables. The walls have a modern decor and even the diners, mainly students, dress in a more elegant manner. Tonight nine of my floor mates and I ate at the restaurant for the first time. It was quite an atypical college dining experience. Some of us enjoyed tapenade, others had gazpacho, and others still had steak. The restaurant is operated by Bon Appetit, the company that provides food at the dining halls on WashU’s campus, yet the food is notably different in preparation and quality from the other food offerings on campus. According to the waiter they make everything, even the crackers, on-site. It seems that the main groups dining there are those celebrating birthdays and those dining with parents who are visiting campus.  Overall, Ibby’s is an exotic culinary option on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis that offers students an upscale dining option for special occasions or just an opportunity for gastronomical variety.
